Which Articulated Dragon Makes the Best Gift for a Child?
A child loves dragons—but which dragon should you give them? Big or small? Bright and colourful or dark and mysterious? With an egg or without? Rainbow, ice, lava or something entirely different?
At ProtoPlot3D we make articulated 3D-printed dragons in Switzerland for playing and collecting. Each ProtoDragon has its own size, colours and character. This guide will help you choose the one that suits your young dragon fan.
Why are articulated dragons special gifts?
A dragon figure can look impressive. But if a child can move it, change its position and use it in imaginary adventures, it offers more than a display piece. Many ProtoDragons have movable segments straight from the printer.
A dragon can sleep, fly through an imaginary sky, protect an egg, guard a cave or live in a world with dinosaurs. Children decide what happens next, and that freedom is part of the fun.

For children who love colours: ProtoDrache Nebelsturm
Some children choose a figure because they see its colours and immediately say, “That's the one!” ProtoDrache Nebelsturm combines an intense Rainbow gradient with striking green eyes.
The articulated figure is printed using bio-based Rainbow PLA and is offered in lengths of 38 and 42 cm. Because colour changes during printing, each dragon can have its own pattern of transitions.
Nebelsturm is ideal for children who like large, eye-catching colourful figures. Explore our ProtoDragon collection.
For younger dragon fans: a dragon with an egg
Not every present needs to be enormous. A smaller dragon with its own egg adds a special play element. Where did the dragon come from? When did it hatch? Who owns the egg? What might be hiding inside?
ProtoDrache Eisjuwel with egg is an example of this type of figure. Small dragon sets can be a lovely addition to a collection, or the very first character in a new fantasy world.

For fans of dark fantasy: SchattenBlitz
Not every dragon fan wants Rainbow colours. Some prefer dark, mysterious characters. ProtoDrache SchattenBlitz has a dark Silk finish that gives it a very different look from a brightly coloured dragon.
Children who enjoy mysterious fantasy worlds, older collectors or those who prefer darker colours may find this model especially appealing.
For a dramatic fire-and-lava look: MagmaNebel
A dragon can look as if it has just emerged from a volcano. ProtoDrache MagmaNebel is designed around that effect, with powerful colours inspired by fire and lava. It is part of our Swiss-made articulated dragon range and is available in large variants.
It suits children fascinated by volcanoes, fiery landscapes and striking fantasy figures.

For collectors and children looking for something unusual
ProtoDragons can be more than individual toys. A child may begin with one model and later add another. Suddenly there's a favourite dragon, a rival, a baby or a whole dragon family.
Our range isn't simply one dragon in dozens of colours. It includes distinct designs such as Nebelsturm, Eisjuwel, BlackDiamond, Polarsturm, Schattenkralle, MagmaNebel, Pitara, Auroria, MiniZorn, Rosengletscher and SchattenBlitz. New characters join the collection over time.

Small dragon or big dragon?
It depends on how the child wants to play. A small dragon is easy to carry and can join an existing collection. A larger dragon has much more presence and can become the main character of an entire fantasy world.
Nebelsturm measures 38 or 42 cm, while dragons such as Auroria and Pitara are much more compact. Think beyond the colour: is the gift meant to be a small companion or the big star of the collection?

With an egg or without?
An egg changes the story, especially for baby dragons. Depending on the model, a little dragon can hatch from it, protect it or be combined with it. As a gift, a dragon with an egg feels like a small play set rather than a figure on its own.
Why don't Rainbow dragons look exactly alike?
Rainbow filaments change colour as the figure prints. The transition between colours can fall at different points on each print. Two dragons based on the same digital model can therefore show different gradients.
For many children, this makes their dragon feel particularly personal and special.

Swiss Made: where are ProtoDragons manufactured?
ProtoPlot3D produces its dragons in Switzerland using 3D printing, then checks the finished results. For our appropriately labelled toys, we select filaments with suitable material and test documentation, including EN 71-3 evidence.
Fine visible layer lines are a normal characteristic of FDM printing. For a closer look at our process, read how ProtoPlot3D figures are made.
What age are ProtoDragons suitable for?
Our appropriately labelled ProtoDragon toys are intended for children aged 3 and over. Always check the product description for the specific model. Warning: Small parts. Not suitable for children under 36 months.

Which ProtoDragon makes the best gift?
There is no universal answer, and that's a good thing. A child who loves strong Rainbow colours may prefer a completely different character from one who enjoys dark fantasy. Here's a simple guide:
- Rainbow and colourful: Nebelsturm
- Ice and an egg: Eisjuwel
- Dark and mysterious: SchattenBlitz
- Fire and lava: MagmaNebel
- Small and playful: Auroria, Pitara or MiniZorn
But the most important choice isn't which model we would pick. It's the dragon that makes the child say, “That's exactly the one!”
